Hey Retro Fans!
It's been an incredibly busy week here at the FrogFind headquarters. We rolled up our sleeves, drained countless cups of coffee, and turned the entire backend inside out.
The goal? To make FrogFind faster, more stable, and, above all, more secure against the dark forces of the modern web.
Here’s a detailed look under the hood at everything we rebuilt:
Performance Boost: The New Image Caching Proxy
We said goodbye to resource-intensive on-the-fly resizing. Now, a smart image proxy handles the job. When a retro browser requests an image, we first check if an optimized retro-sized version (a lean 256 colors, correct dimensions) is already stored on our hard drive. The effect: Your loading times drop drastically, and our server saves its CPU cycles. We even built a new "Cache Radar" dashboard for admins to show us exactly how efficiently the pond is running. 🐸📊
Security & Smart-Logic: Battle to the Bots!
The world of SEO crawlers and scrapers is aggressive. Since FrogFind utilizes valuable API quotas (Google & Brave), we had to upgrade.Hard Bot Gatekeeper: Known data kraken and SEO crawlers are now rejected in milliseconds with a 403 Forbidden, before they can make any search queries.
Intelligent Interceptor: Many users simply type “Wikipedia” or “Reddit” into the search box to navigate there. This burns API calls for nothing. We’ve built an "Operational Interceptor" that intercepts these one-word searches and gives the user a friendly, bilingual tip to search directly for the topic (e.g., “Apollo 11”) instead.
- The Exotic Radar: Real Nerds in the Pond
The best thing about FrogFind is seeing which devices actually visit. Thanks to our improved browser detection, we've caught a few absolute rarities over the past week:
- Sega Dreamcast with Netscape 3.0: Yes, someone actually hooked their Dreamcast up to the net to use FrogFind. Absolute legend! 🕹️
- Atari ST / TOS with HighWire: Genuine Atari hardware on the web, using software released in 1993. 8 dedicated hits.
- Off By One Browser (<1.2MB): The tiny, installation-free HTML 3.2 browser for Windows from the early 2000s. A true minimalist highlight.
- IBrowse on Android: Someone launched an Amiga emulator on their phone and then surfed from within Workbench. Nerd level: Over 9000. 👑
Conclusion: FrogFind is now leaner, faster, and more defensive than ever. We are ready to keep the retro web alive for many years to come – one search at a time!
